Utilizing existing ambulatory surgical centres and creation of additional such centres and their integration into the health care system will not be an easy task. The goal is ensuring smooth patient experience, protect patient safety and improve quality of care and timely delivery. The recently passed Bill 60 will further regulate the integration of surgical centres into the health care system in Ontario.
There is a false belief that creation of such surgical centres is considered a step towards privatization of the health care system. The reality is these centres ,which are built by private funds, will be operated privately with all safeguards in place utilizing public health care funds in a private setting in order to achieve timely delivery of expert safe care and better efficiency without compromising care quality. In other words, patients are not going to pay for OHIP covered procedures similar to when procedures are done in a hospital. Interestingly cost of a procedure when done at the out of hospital surgical center is significantly less compared to when same procedure is done at the hospital. Saved funds and reduced cases backlog freeing more OR time can then be directed to the more complex procedures that have to be done in hospitals shortening hospital surgical wait times for cancer surgeries and other complex surgeries.
Surgical backlog with long wait times for surgeries has long been a problem in Ontario. However, this backlog not only has been exaggerated and worsened during the COVID pandemic but it has also reached critical levels that are no longer acceptable.
Interestingly, Astra has been in the forefront leading the change in the delivery of ambulatory surgical care in Ontario. Astra minimally invasive surgery unit in Mississauga has been delivering OHIP insured ambulatory gynaecological surgical care for the past 12 years. Our new addition in Brampton “ Astra Women’s Health and Ambulatory Surgery Center” solidifies our commitment to our community.
We are currently trying to work with the Ministry of Health, Ontario Health in local community hospitals to implement the transition to integrated ambulatory surgical Centres serving communities in Ontario.
